7 Layers of Design

If decorating your home is a daunting task and you simply have no idea where to start, I want to share with you the steps I take to putting together the rooms in my home. Fortunately, because we move often, I get to start from scratch with an empty space. However, I encourage you to do the same. By clearing out your space, you can begin with a clean slate. This also gives you the opportunity to get rid of anything that does not come back into the room or repurpose it somewhere else in your home.

Once you have a blank room, you can assess it's primary function and the look and style that you want to achieve. Searching for inspirational images on Pinterest or websites like Apartment Therapy will give you plenty of designed interiors to help you find your own personal style. Now comes putting it all together. Let's begin.

The 7 Layers of Design are as follows:

1. PAINT or WALL TREATMENTS

Choosing your paint or wall treatments does not need to be difficult. Before painting any colors on your walls, decide what shades you are leaning towards by selecting from the many swatches available at your local paint or hardware store. Take them home and tape the swatches to your wall. Once you have narrowed down you best 3, go back to the store and purchase sample jars. Most hardware stores now offer a small sample that you can take home and apply to your walls to make sure you love the color in your space before committing to it. Grays and Greiges (a blend of beige and gray) are trending these days and are a perfect neutral color for any style decor.

2. FLOORING AND AREA RUGS

A rug may be considered an accessory, but it can be the foundation of a gorgeous space. Since it will be the anchor of the room therefore try to tie in the furniture, color palette and accessories back to the rug.

In selecting your rug, keep in mind your lifestyle and family's needs. Whether it is a high-maintenance rug or if it can be easily cleaned. It should be large enough to anchor and support the gathering space.

An area rug will add warmth and an additional layer of texture to the space. In a Living Room or Family Room, it is crucial to add a rug to soften the space and add comfort to these rooms that you will spend the most time in.

3. LARGE FURNITURE PIECES

Next Layer will take time and the largest part of your budget to select. These pieces are large ticket items like your sofa, accent chairs, bed, dining table. These items will take center stage and be the star of the room. Because of their importance, selecting the style and color will determine the personality of the space.

I suggest when it comes to selecting your sofa, for example, to keep it a neutral color, a durable but soft fabric that can be easily cleaned and to make sure the cushions are stuffed with a high quality filling. Overtime, the cheap fillers tend to break down and lose their shape.

Your accent chairs can stand out more and can be used to express more of your personality with a pop of color or pattern or unique frame design.

4. CASEGOODS

Next layer will be your Casegoods which generally refers to furniture made of hard materials, such as wood, metal, glass or plastic. Examples of casegoods include chests, dressers, bookshelves, and cabinets.

The finish of your casegoods should blend well with your upholstered pieces and all of them should stay in the same color family.

5. LIGHTING

Lighting is one of the key elements that helps make your house a home. The proper lighting enables you to perform tasks easily, makes you feel safer and more comfortable, and allows you to enjoy your home at its full potential. Each room, however, has specific and unique general and accent lighting needs.

Use lighting to bring out the best in your living spaces. Enhance your room's ambiance, dramatize wall textures, accent artwork, or just provide general illumination for your den, living room, family room, playrooms, or bedrooms. A variety of different types of lighting fixtures will work for both your general lighting and accent lighting needs such as Pendants, Chandeliers, Floor Lamps, Table Lamps, Sconces, etc

6. TEXTILES

Functionally and esthetically, textiles hold a large part of our interior space and play a significant role in our everyday activities. Here’s how to use textiles in interiors. We use them to create the desired mood and to show off our personal taste and style preferences.

Textiles create a cozy atmosphere, and if they are coordinated in color, they make a natural and harmonized ambiance. There is no better way to personalize the space than by adding a bunch of soft and fluffy pillows, soft throws and beautiful curtain panels to add another layer of texture and to soften the rooms in your home.

7. ACCESSORIES & WALL ART

THis is the final layer and one of the most important ones. These pieces will add punches of color, show off your personality and give you an opportunity to create unique displays.

As I watched my body change slowly from Spring to Summer for the worst last year, I felt powerless. I kept indulging, making bad and unhealthy choices but that was just part of the vicious cycle. The softer, flabbier and more lbs I put on, the more depressed I got, and the worse I treated my body.
